A camp where many set off to escape the demands of a hectic schedule—some seeking stress relief, others simply looking for a little enjoyment. Here, all you need is yourself. A tennis racket is provided, along with a coach who is not only relaxed but also fair when it matters.
My experience at the camp has always been amazing. I have been attending the tennis camp since Grade 7, and I enjoy it because it not only provides a temporary distraction but also gives me a reason to pause, rest and slow down. Amit Sir, who has known me since I joined the school, understands both my academic struggles and the reasons why I am unable to attend the camp regularly.
Tennis camp is held every term for about three to four weeks. Depending on the number of players in the junior and senior schools, the timings are decided. This time, it was held only during game time for the seniors, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., which often stretches until 6:30.
We always begin with a rally, where players simply hit the ball across the net to each other until everyone is warmed up. Afterwards, we play a game according to Amit Sir’s rules. These usually involve eliminating players by allowing us only one or two lives. If a team loses, all its members have to do either squats or push-ups. That is Sir’s way of motivating us—and perhaps forcing us—to do better!
Apart from all this, when there are a large number of players, Amit Sir divides us according to our skill levels. Players who are still learning practice on the mini-court, which consists of a small net and a box marked out with chalk. The mini-net is provided by Amit Sir, making it a simple and inexpensive setup. The more experienced players, meanwhile, practise on the main court.
Overall, tennis camp is great fun and a wonderful place to learn about sportsmanship, teamwork, perseverance and, of course, the joy of playing a sport.
