The students of class 9 were recently presented with a truly wonderful and unique opportunity to take part in a hands-on, practical workshop hosted by Sarat Chandra Sir, a former teacher of our school and an avid environmentalist. The primary goal of this engaging workshop was to teach us how to design and build a completely self-sustaining vegetable garden, closely imitating the natural principles of a thriving forest ecosystem where plants grow without artificial intervention. To build the garden from the ground up, all the students enthusiastically worked together in small groups. First, using shovels and spades, we carefully dug out a wide, two-foot-deep trench in the ground. Once the pit was prepared, we filled it up layer by layer with a rich mixture of dry leaf litter, decaying wooden logs, and fertile garden soil. A generous layer of organic manure was then carefully sprinkled over the topmost layer of soil to provide immediate nutrition for the young plants. Finally, after gently sowing the seeds, the entire plot was neatly bordered using bricks to give it structure and keep the soil from washing away during watering. The main idea behind this clever technique was that as the buried leaf litter and fallen logs gradually decomposed under the soil over time, they would act like a sponge to absorb moisture and continuously provide the growing seedlings with a steady, long-lasting supply of natural nutrients. The Landcare workshop turned out to be a remarkably engaging, informative, and memorable learning experience for every single individual who took part in it. Beyond the hands-on gardening skills, we gained a newfound appreciation for natural ecosystems, sustainable farming, and the importance of environmental conservation.
