One of the most memorable moments leading up to the World Cup final was our attempt to convince the teachers to screen the match. One such moment came during our Culture class, when we had an activity where everyone wrote anonymous notes to the class. Surprisingly, many of us had written the same request: “Please screen the World Cup final.”
As Abhishek Sir began reading the notes aloud, the excitement in the class grew. Every time he read, “We are requesting the World Cup final to be screened,” the class burst into applause. It was clear that this was not just the wish of a few students; it was something many of us had hoped for.
To our surprise, the school actually agreed to screen the final. Since the match was scheduled for midnight on Sunday, the school made a special arrangement. We came to school on Sunday following the Monday timetable, while Monday was declared a holiday. None of us had expected our request to be accepted.
The final between Spain and Argentina proved to be a boring one. Both teams created several chances, but E. Martinez’s excellent goalkeeping kept the score at 0–0 until the end. The match went into extra time and remained goalless until the 106th minute, when Torres scored the winning goal to secure Spain’s second World Cup trophy. Even after being reduced to ten men following Enzo Fernández’s red card, Argentina fought until the very end. However, Spain had played brilliant football throughout and eventually lifted the trophy with a 1–0 victory.
Every attack, save and near miss kept us awake and cheering. Watching the World Cup together would be a very unforgettable memory for all of us.
